Photographer Pauline Darley Interview
Stone by stone we build a “beautiful something” together.
Originally hailing from Burgundy, France, Pauline Darley is a 25 year-old fashion photographer living in Paris. At 17, she first picked up a camera and has been photographing ever since. In the interview below, Pauline shares with us her processes, interests, and thoughts as an artist.
STARDUST: Describe your perfect day.
PAULINE DAREY: My perfect day would be in the morning I answer my emails and organize my next photo shoots. In the afternoon, I am shooting a cool project in a beautiful place or studio. In the evening, I see my friends and spend time with my boyfriend or go visit a castle (yes, I like castles so much!).
S: What is your current obsession and why?
PD: My current obsession is with castles. My favorite castle is Neuschwanstein in Bavaria, Germany. I like the castle’s history of King Ludwig II and his beautiful architectural inspirations from the Middle Ages, Gothic, and Byzantine era as well where it’s located within the mountains, the lake, and the forest.
S: What attracted you to fashion first?
PD: Fashion is a way to create a story around people.
S: How do you go about picking your team for a shoot?
PD: In the beginning, I found my team through Facebook. Now I always have the same team because I trust them and they know what I like and dislike. I approach my team with a theme and some details of what I want to do for a shoot. Everyone brings me their ideas and we talk and develop the project to what we all like. Stone by stone we build a “beautiful something” together.
S: What do you do when something doesn’t go as planned? Do you get upset, sad, or do you try to get everything under control or go with the flow? Describe your process during a shoot.
PD: When something doesn’t go as planned, I am stressed and I isolate myself for 3 minutes. I take a breath and think about what can I do and how can I find a solution.
S: What are certain things that you feel like you need to work on?
PD: Because I didn’t study photography I miss a lot of things. I have to work on my way of telling stories, the lighting, my frame—in fact, everything. Everyday I am working on what needs to be improved!
S: What makes a good image to you?
PD: For me it is the staff—a good choice of talented creatives. If everyone is motivated by the project, the project will be good.
S: If you could do a collaboration with anyone (dead or alive) who would it be and why?
PD: Mads Mikkelsen !
S: What separates you from others in your field?
PD: Honestly, no idea..!
S: As artists, we are constantly growing and learning everyday. What advice do you have for beginners?
PD: Always always always work on your craft.
S: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
PD: I don’t think about the future because It’s stressful for me. I really hope that I will always be a photographer who loves what they do.
S: What is your life motto?
PD: Be nice and work! (And see the beautiful things in the life)
